Top 15 wins under Jurgen Klopp

491 games and 299 wins is painstakingly challenging to narrow down to 15, but I’ve had a go. Here are my top 15 wins of the Klopp era…

15 - Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United

5th March 2023

Premier League

Starting XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Elliott; Salah, Gakpo, Nunez

Subs: Milner, Firmino, Bajcetic, Jota, Jones

Perhaps a little lower than some may expect, but it’s worth mentioning that this was a rare high point in a largely poor season. Liverpool were brilliant in the second half as a passive United embarrassed themselves, and Mohamed Salah became the club’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League.

14 - Liverpool 1-0 Flamengo

21st December 2019

Club World Cup Final

Starting XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Keita; Salah, Firmino, Mane

Subs: Milner, Lallana, Shaqiri, Origi

A very tense Club World Cup final, the Brazilian team proving to be stubborn opposition for the Reds. Eventually, in extra time, a breakthrough was found. Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane linked up for Roberto Firmino to coolly slot home and crown Liverpool as Champions of the World.

13 - Liverpool 2-0 Chelsea

14th April 2019

Premier League

Starting XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Keita; Salah, Firmino, Mane

Subs: Wijnaldum, Milner, Shaqiri

A tense and nervy affair at Anfield as Liverpool beat Chelsea at Anfield for the first time since 2012 and keep their title challenge alive, despite all manner of pressure. Sadio Mane heads home from a brilliant Henderson cross, and Salah hits the rocket of all rockets to secure a 2-0 win.

12 - Tottenham 0-2 Liverpool

1st June 2019

Champions League Final

Starting XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mane

Subs: Milner, Gomez, Origi

Now, if we were ranking moments under Klopp, this would be top two, maybe even top one. But thinking purely about the performance, the game and the win; we’re looking at a pretty controlled final where Liverpool kept Tottenham at arms’ length, bookended by goals from Salah and Divock Origi. Champions League winners.

11 - Liverpool 4-3 Borussia Dortmund

14th April 2016

Europa League quarter-final second leg

Starting XI: Mignolet; Clyne, Lovren, Sakho, Moreno; Milner, Can; Lallana, Firmino, Coutinho; Origi

Subs: Sturridge, Lucas, Allen

Early days Klopp was a Liverpool team that had its faults - and his former club Borussia Dortmund were slick and 0-2 up early on at Anfield through Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Origi finished off a lovely move but Marco Reus looked to end the tie at 1-3. Coutinho and Mamadou Sakho made it level on the night, but it took Dejan Lovren’s stoppage-time header to take the Reds to the Europa League semis in incredible circumstances.

10 - Manchester United 0-5 Liverpool

24th October 2021

Premier League

Starting XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Keita, Milner; Salah, Firmino, Jota

Subs: Mane, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jones

One of the most dominant performances in this club’s Premier League history. Soon after Naby Keita opened the scoring, Diogo Jota turned home. A clinic in finishing from Salah ended in a hat-trick for the Egyptian as Liverpool decimated United on their own patch to continue their strong start to the season.

9 - Leicester City 0-4 Liverpool

26th December 2019

Premier League

Starting XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Keita, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mane

Subs: Milner, Lallana, Origi

As the Reds returned from being crowned World Champions in Qatar, they travelled to Leicester City, 2nd in the league at the time. The league leaders blew Leicester away, Roberto Firmino striking twice, James Milner scoring a penalty and Trent Alexander-Arnold capping his best Liverpool performance with a stunning goal to round it all off.

8 - Manchester City 2-3 Liverpool

16th April 2022

FA Cup Semi-Final

Starting XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Keita, Thiago; Salah, Mane, Diaz

Subs: Henderson, Firmino, Jota, Jones

The most impressive part of the cup double in 21/22 was the glorious FA Cup semi-final victory over Manchester City at Wembley. Six days before, the teams had drawn in the league. Liverpool were breathtaking in the first half, with Thiago Alcantara producing a chemic performance in midfield. Ibrahima Konate opened the scoring, Sadio Mane’s pressing made it two and then Mane finished off a delightful team move. City made it close in the second half, but the electric Reds marched onto the final.

7 - Liverpool 3-0 Manchester City

4th April 2018

Champions League Quarter-Final first leg

Starting XI: Karius; Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Milner; Salah, Firmino, Mane

Subs: Wijnaldum, Moreno, Solanke

A different type of win over City, as the underdogs Liverpool blew Pep Guardiola’s runaway league winners apart in the first half of this Champions League quarter-final. Salah finished after some lovely work from Firmino, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain rifled one home and Mane made it three before the break. The Reds protected their lead after half-time and had one foot in the semi-finals.

6 - Liverpool 3-1 Manchester City

9th November 2019

Premier League

Starting XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mane

Subs: Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gomez

It was another early blitz that did the job here in one of the title-winning season’s most important victories. Liverpool came into the game six points ahead of City, and their lead would be extended courtesy of a Fabinho piledriver, a sumptuous series of cross-field passes from Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson headed home by Salah, and Mane put the game beyond City in the second half. Nine points clear in early November…

5 - Newcastle United 1-2 Liverpool

27th August 2023

Premier League

Starting XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Endo, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Gakpo, Diaz

Subs: Gomez, Elliott, Jota, Nunez, Quansah

Newcastle appeared a genuine threat to the established top six this season, and when Anthony Gordon put them in front against Liverpool on day three, they were bouncing. Captain Virgil Van Dijk was sent off, Trent Alexander-Arnold walked the tightrope of a red card too. Liverpool hung in there and some preposterous goalkeeping from Alisson Becker kept it at 1-0. Then, two late finishes from Darwin Nunez turned the game on its head for a miraculous win.

4 - Chelsea 0-1 Liverpool

25th February 2024

League Cup Final

Starting XI: Kelleher; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Endo, Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Elliott, Gakpo, Diaz

Subs: Gomez, McConnell, Clark, Danns, Tsimikas, Quansah

This was a miracle too. With a squad brought to its knees by injuries, Liverpool turned up to Wembley for the League Cup Final as underdogs. They not only held off Chelsea, but were better than them. As the game went on, Liverpool’s heroic efforts continued, with youngsters coming onto the pitch and outshining Chelsea’s billion-pound squad. Van Dijk nodded in Kostas Tsimikas’ corner in extra time for one of the greatest final wins in this club’s history.

3 - Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool

2nd November 2019

Premier League

Starting XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson; Lallana, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mane

Subs: Oxlade-Chamberlain, Origi, Keita

The City game at number six was preceded by Villa away. Liverpool go into it six ahead of City with the Champions to come a week later. 1-0 down to Villa and it looks like the gap is down to three, with City about to have a chance to level at Anfield. An incredible turnaround in the last few minutes, as Robertson heads in Mane’s cross, before Mane wins it in the fourth minute of injury time from Alexander-Arnold’s corner. The biggest win in the title-winning season.

2 - Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona

7th May 2019

Champions League semi-final second leg

Starting XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Milner; Shaqiri, Origi, Mane

Subs: Wijnaldum, Gomez, Sturridge

Many would have this in top spot, and it’s easy to see why. Liverpool were beaten 3-0 in the first leg of this Champions League semi-final after some Lionel Messi magic. Losing Salah and Firmino to injury meant Xherdan Shaqiri and Origi were tasked with leading the line with Mane. Origi got one back early on, and Alisson repelled Messi and former Reds Luis Suarez and Coutinho. Two quick-fire goals from Gini Wijnaldum - on as a sub for the injured Robertson - had the tie level, before a piece of ingenuity from Alexander-Arnold teed up Origi to complete the comeback, book the place in the final and seal Anfield’s greatest night.

1 - Bayern Munich 1-3 Liverpool

13th March 2019

Champions League last 16 second leg

Starting XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Wijnaldum, Milner; Salah, Firmino, Mane

Subs: Fabinho, Lallana, Origi

Liverpool had drawn the first leg of this heavyweight tie at Anfield 0-0. The Reds were impeccable in the second leg against a world-class Bayern Munich team. Van Dijk’s terrific long ball was controlled gorgeously by Mane, who dinked Manuel Neuer in audacious style. After an equaliser from the boot of Joel Matip, Van Dijk converted a corner before a perfect cross from Salah was headed in by Mane. Van Dijk, Joel Matip and Alisson were exceptional as a Bayern team that contained Thomas Muller, Joshua Kimmich and future Red Thiago, were kept at arms’ length. Robert Lewandowski was the best striker on the planet at this time, and in a 20-month period, played in fifteen Champions League games, and scored in all of them; apart from the two against Liverpool. Let’s be clear; a year later, this Bayern team wins the treble and blitzes the Champions League. Klopp’s Liverpool controlled 180 minutes of football against them.
